Ways to Make Advisory Better

By: Jennifer Guzman

April 28, 2008

Advisory is considered a place where the students learn about themselves. Most students here don’t agree with that; they think that advisory is a waste of time. I like advisory but I have some ideas that can make it better.

I think that we should do more workshops with other classes. Every advisory should have a specific day to plan an activity for each month and we all go to the gym and do the activity. We will all be separated by grades so each grade will have their own workshop sometime in the month.

I also think that we should have more time to do homework because advisory is a place to keep track of your academics. I’m not going to get an "A" by answering if “I’m more like a fruit or vegetable”.

I also think that teachers should be less strict in advisory so that kids can open up to them. Teachers should talk to students; that way the students don’t feel as pressured to talk. I also think that we should discuss topics that are important to us. That way we are getting to know each other but at the same time learning.

I also would like teachers to talk to their students about college and after high school to help students find what they want to do as a career. Also I think that our advisory teachers should let us know about scholarships and internships.

If we don’t like advisory we can change it; people need to speak their minds and open up more. I would love for us to do more activities and talk about college. I think that advisory should be a class to help us in life and not just high school. I think that there is so many ways to make advisory better but those were a few of mine.
