My Favorite Spring Break

It was the first spring break I ever had. When people were flipping their calendar to February, I stood in America for the first time with my family. It was 2008, I moved to this country and went to a new high school with little English and no friends. I did not have plenty of time to become familiar with the new environment, because I spent my whole vacation on saying goodbye to my friends. My mother always says: time waits for no one, and now I finally realize what do that means.

Studying in another language is a nightmare. I struggled with my grades all the time and little by little I felt like collapsing. Then spring break came just in time. Although I had been here for about half a year, I still did not have many friends. My parents worked most of the day so the only thing I could do is read and play instruments at home. Until one day, someone was knocking the door while I was playing my erhu (a Chinese instrument). I put it down as I was kind of annoyed and opened the door. There was a girl about the same age as me. She said she was amazed by the sound of instrument and the music I played. She never heard something like it before and wondered what it was. I could not describe an erhu, so I just let her in and showed the instrument to her, then she became more interested.

For the week of spring break, we would play music in our spare time. She was a genius. She told me that she could play 26 types of instruments and asked me if I could teach her how to play the erhu. As exchange I asked her to teach me how to play the violin. The erhu is not my favorite instrument despite playing the instrument for many years. I had to keeping practicing; focusing less at socializing with friends. When I started to teach her and played with her, these memories do not seem regretful as usual, I felt these memories were worth the while.

My mother was right, time waits for no one. One week of spring break goes by very fast. Soon we were busy with our school work and could not play together as usual. However at night, I could hear her playing instruments. Shortly after my parents told me they got a new house, we moved. I put my erhu in front of her door to say goodbye, and left. We never met again, but that was my favorite spring break.
